First it was an expansion project in South Carolina, and now recycler ACI Plastics Inc. is growing in the company's home state of Michigan.

ACI Plastics of Flint will use a $300,000 state grant as part of an $8 million project to build a recycling system for post-consumer plastic film, according to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

The company did not return a call seeking comment, but ACI Plastics' new recycling system will reprocess 25 million pounds of post-consumer film each year in Flint. Employment will increase by 25 to 30 workers with salaries ranging from $17 to $20 an hour, the state recently said.

News of the expansion comes not long after the company said it would create 21 jobs through a $4 million plastics recycling facility in Liberty, S.C.

The company's operations in South Carolina "will include the recovery of post-industrial/pre-consumer scrap plastics from molders throughout the Southeast," according to the state Department of Commerce.

"The company will initially provide size reduction [granulation] and proprietary separation processes. ACI Plastics South plans to later add blending, density separation, pelletizing and post-consumer processing capabilities at the facility," the state said in March.

Company President Scott Melton, in a statement, indicated the facility has room for growth.

"We are pleased to expand the size of our operation in South Carolina. The 138,000-square-foot building on 51 acres will allow us to significantly grow over the next decade. The access to a solid workforce, the Port of Charleston and nearby customers made this investment a key part of ACI's future," he said.
